No. 8 moment – Adams repeats as national runner-up in the 100 fly

Continuing our countdown to the top moment from the past year, we now take a look at our No. 8 moment of 2012-13. Margot Adams continued her dominating trend in the butterfly at the 2013 NCAA Championship when she repeated as the second-fastest 100 flyer in the nation in a wild championship final race on March 7.

Adams, who holds the program’s varsity record in the 100 fly, placed third in preliminaries after hitting the wall in 54.96 seconds, behind the defending national champion and a newcomer competing in just her first NCAA meet.

That evening she was back in the pool, this time looking to not only improve on her qualifying time, but to beat the field. In the first half of the race, freshman Joyce Kwok of Post University controlled the race with a split time of 25.01, with Adams and defending champion Mychala Lynch of Grand Canyon tied for second in 25.50.

The second half would be a different story as both Adams and Lynch would close the gap on Kwok’s lead. At the final turn, Post’s freshman had a minimal advantage and in the final 25, Lynch and Adams both passed Kwok. Adams sprinted to the finish nearly a second faster down the stretch than Kwok but so did Lynch. Adams finished with a time of 54.63 seconds, falling to Lynch who recorded a time of 54.31.

While Lynch repeated as the national champion, Alaska’s own Margot Adams repeated as well as the national runner-up. Lynch graduated last spring from GCU, so coming into this season, Adams, who will be a junior, is the top returning 100 butterfly swimmer in the country.

Now she will look to claim the top spot on the podium come time for the 2014 championship in Genva, Ohio.

Tomorrow, we’ll reveal our No. 7 moment of the 2012-13 season – STAY TUNED!
