Farmer’s Market Express Returns

The Student Activities Office will be providing free shuttle rides the the Farmer’s Market on Wednesdays. The shuttle will leave the Wood Center Bus Stop at noon and 1 p.m., with return trips to campus at 12:45 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. Walking down and riding back is an option too! Shuttles will run May 29 – Aug. 14.

Academic Advising Center’s summer location

The Academic Advising Center will move to 101 MBS Complex on Yukon Drive for the summer while the fifth floor of the Gruening Building is renovated. Students must show their PolarExpress card or other form of picture ID for service. The move will take place the week of May 20 -24. There will be limited academic advising appointments that week, and walk-in advising will be restricted to May 23 – 24.

Some academic advisors will be traveling for training purposes, and the advising center will not be fully staffed until mid-June. Renovations are expected to be completed by Aug. 1 when the advising center will return to Gruening Building. It will be located in room 510 instead of 509 (same location, different room number). All telephone numbers will remain the same.

Ice cream Thursdays returning soon

Starting May 30, the Student Activities Office will begin hosting Ice Cream Thursdays on the upper patio of the Wood Center from 12 – 2 p.m. Ice cream is $1 per scoop, and flavors change weekly.

UAF’s 91st commencement to take place this weekend

UAF’s 91st graduation ceremony will be held at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks on Sunday, May 12, 2013.

Commencement begins at 1:30 p.m. and doors of the Carlson Center open at noon. Graduates are asked to be in the Carlson Center by 12:30 p.m.

Rehearsal is at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 11 at the Carlson Center.

Tickets are not required for the commencement ceremony nor is there a charge to attend.

Order your cap and gown: contact the bookstore at 907-474-6858 for assistance.

Stream Commencement online live during the ceremony. Webcast begins at 1:30 p.m. on May 12.

OIT outage scheduled for fire alarm safety test

The Office of Information Technology has scheduled a planned outage starting at 4 a.m. on Sunday, May 19, to conduct the annual fire alarm safety test. The 12-hour exercise takes most technology services offline while fire systems are tested. This includes the UAF website, access to UAOnline and other systems.

OIT recommends setting up an alternate login to access your Google Apps @ UA email account during this outage. Simply set up a Google-side password before the outage. This password is different from the one you use to access Google Apps with an Internet browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox.

UAF services offer one-stop Signers’ Hall location

The Business Office, Parking Services and PolarExpress now have a convenient one-stop Signers’ Hall location.

Students can now take care of tuition and fee payment, purchase a parking decal and get a PolarExpress card in one place. A recent reorganization merges PolarExpress and Parking Services with the Business Office. For added convenience, these services will also have an auxiliary location in 116 Eielson.

As of this July, the Business Office will be renamed the Office of the Bursar.

The Department of Recreation, Adventure and Wellness combined the Student Recreation Center, Outdoor Adventures, the Patty Arena and developing Outdoor Education in January 2012. Over the past academic year many ideas, facilities and services have been implemented. Take a survey to help DRAW assess these changes and future plans. If a certain area of the department does not apply to your experience, you will have the option of skipping those questions.

User feedback wanted on proposed disc golf course

The North Campus Subcommittee is seeking public input about the addition of an 18-hole disc golf course to the North Campus trail system for use during the summer.

The proposed course starts near the satellite dish, heads down to the Potato field via Lit Loop. From the Potato field it joins Midnight Express and Big Whizzy to the finish at the satellite dish. View the map.

Student sustainability worker receives new recycling bins

UAF student Nikki Navio recently received over $4,000 dollars worth of new recycling bins from the Coca-Cola Foundation, Keep America Beautiful. They are the nation’s leading non-profit organization that helps to build and green local communities. UAF was chosen because of its recycling experience and the ability to sustain our program in the future. These bins will be placed at UAF sporting events for reducing waste and recycling.

Research Day at UAF

The annual Research Day event on April 30, showcased the high quality and opportunities for undergraduates to engage in hands-on research and scholarly activity. This year Research Day integrated efforts from the Office of the Vice Chancellor of Research, the Honors Program and Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Activity.

UAF brought 120 local K-12 students to tour campus research facilities and the museum. Dozens of undergraduates had an opportunity to present poster or oral presentations, and attend a keynote address by John Walsh, Chief Scientist at the International Arctic Research Center.

The winners of the Undergraduate Research Symposium were:

1st prize: Jonathan Nations for his presentation on “Scansorial and arboreal behavior in Northern Red-Backed Voles in Alaska”
2nd prize: Bryant Hopkins for his presentation on “Phylogenectic appliactions for comparing United States Senators”
3rd prize: Kyla Hovda for her presentation on “Applied undergraduate financial research”

John Walsh received the 2013 Research Lifetime Achievement Award at the 6th Annual Research Day. The award given by the Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Alaska Fairbanks recognizes individuals for their “sustainable lifetime contribution to the Research and the University of Alaska.”
