UA College Savings Plan 529 day activities

Join the UA College Savings Plan staff Wednesday, May 29 between 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Suite 207 Butrovich for 529 Day Activities. There will be a chance to talk to the staff about the benefits of 529 plans and have a piece of cake if you stop by around noon. Giveaways will be available to employees who sign up for payroll deduction or who increase the amount of your current deduction. There will also be games with prizes.

Construction continues in the campus core

Construction on the UAF campus is underway. Allow extra time to get to your destination, be aware of truck traffic and avoid walking through construction zones. If traveling on the core area of the Fairbanks campus, be aware of the following projects:

Tanana Loop will be closed at S. Chandalar beginning Tuesday, May 28. At that time there will be no pedestrian access to the east. Detour signage will be posted, and an access road will open from S. Chandalar to the Bunnell South parking lot.
The stairs from Alumni drive to Tanana Loop will also close Tuesday, May 28. Please use alternate routes.
Tanana Drive will be closed from the Fine Arts parking lot to the Duckering Building beginning Thursday, May 30. This will also close the one-way traffic down Taku Drive (no pedestrian access).

Ski Hut closed for renovations

The UAF Ski Hut will be closed for renovations. Contractors will begin work on Monday, May 27, and are expected to wrap up the work by Sunday, June 30.

The Ski Hut on West Ridge was built with funds from the Fairbanks Kiwanis and Lyons Clubs. Community members and avid skiers Kent Karns and Rick Solie were said to have organized a large work party to build it in the late 1970s.

The University of Alaska Press has released Nuvuk, the Northernmost: Altered Land, Altered Lives in Barrow, Alaska by Daniel James Inulak Lum.

For years, tour guide Daniel Lum brought visitors as well as his children out to the remote corners of Barrow, Alaska, one of the northernmost cities in the world, to witness polar bears and walrus on the beaches. Over time, snapping photos for tourists and shooting photographs of his own, he has been witness to the profound environmental changes taking place as his homeland shifts and disappears before his eyes.

As arguments over climate change rage in more temperate locales, Nuvuk, the Northernmost is a poignant snapshot of life in a town where these changes are impossible to overlook. UA Press releases “Northern Exposures”

The University of Alaska Press has released a new book. Northern Exposures: An Adventuring Career in Stories and Images by Jonathan Waterman, is a collection twenty-three stories from Waterman’s thirty-year career showing the evolution of the adventurer’s career and work, from ducking avalanches near the Gulf of Alaska to searching for the most pristine tundra on the continent, and from writing haiku on Denali in the depth of winter to decrying oil development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

The essays and photographs collected in Northern Exposures are a product of this passion for exploration and offer a view into adventuring in the North and beyond. The book features ninety-six photographs taken by Waterman during his expeditions.

Engineering Building construction traffic to increase

There will be construction traffic beginning Thursday, May 23 going from Salcha Street at the Eielson Building through the fenced path within the plaza to the Engineering Facility construction site.

Please be aware of marked signs and heavy equipment. Avoid walking through construction zones.

Marketing and Communications staff moves

Marketing and Communications staff members previously located in 201 Eielson, have moved upstairs 304 and 304C Eielson. This is a temporary location until mid-August, when the entire department relocate to the north end of the Eielson Building’s third floor. The August move will also relocate MC staff currently housed off campus in the Wells Fargo Building on Geist Road.

UArctic informational session scheduled

Research funding opportunity for undergraduate students

The office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Activity announces a new round of funding for undergraduate students. Students are invited to apply for one of several awards of $2,500 each for project activity during the fall 2013 semester. The request for proposals and the award application form can be found on the URSA awards page at www.uaf.edu/ursa. Applications are due June 28, 2013. URSA provides multiple funding opportunities for undergraduate students and mentors throughout the year. More than $137,000 was awarded in academic year 2013.

CNSM is positively charged with good news

The College of Natural Science and Mathematics has released its latest newsletter, Positively Charged, and it is filled with stories about ancient marine reptiles, graduate students doing cool things and even a brainteaser that asks you to find a polar bear hiding behind some research equipment.
